Ornate Domes

KESHAV
MANDAPAM
The Keshav Mandapam in Akshardham mandir is a grand, ornately carved
dome. The pillars in the beginning are four-sided, then eight-sided
and finally thirty-two-sided. In the ancient shilpa shastras the pillars
are called the ‘Swastik Sthambh’.
The pillars in the Keshav Mandapam are decorated with 24 ornate murtis
of Lord Keshav and others.
In accordance with the ancient Panchratra Shastra of India emphasis
has been laid on the 24 revered forms of the supreme God in the Bhakti
Sampradays. These forms are known as Keshav or Chaturvyuh.
The Chaturvyuh forms have special names with respect to the weapons
they wield. Their murtis are enshrined in ancient and modern mandirs
of India. However, nowhere have they been established in one place as
per the pure shilpa shastra tradition. Its twenty-four forms on the
pillars in the Keshav Mandapam are the first ever in India.
The establishment of God’s Keshav or Chaturvyuh forms is a revival
of a tradition that has nearly faded away.
